The first part of chapter 4, talks about unity, how we must endeavor (or set a goal of) unity in the body of Christ. We are all one and the same in Christ, we are His body.
Ephesians 4:11 God gave each of us gifts; some to be apostles (men divinely chosen to represent Christ), some prophets (proclaimers of truth), some evangelists (leading the lost to Christ), and some “pastors and teachers” (teaching and leading in the Word).
v12 The purpose of ALL spiritual gifts is found in verse 12&13:
1) for the equipping of the saints for the work of the ministry,
2) for the edifying of the body of Christ.
v13 Until we all become unified in our faith and knowledge of the Son of God - the same as Jesus had!
v14 This will always be until Christ returns -- We should no longer be tossed to and fro as a boat in the ocean (chasing shadows), by every wind of doctrine, by men who lie in wait to deceive us.
v15 We must speak the truth in love, that we may grow-up in all things that Jesus has for us and bring honor to Him.
v16 The whole body is joined together and each part must perform its function, causing the the body to grow together in love!
Ephesians 4:11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.
• God has blessed each of us with Spiritual Gifts.
• The purpose of these gifts is to: equip the saints for the work of the ministry AND to edify the body of Christ!
• Until we all become one in faith and knowledge, just like Jesus had for us.
• We should not be “squirrely” Christians, chasing every form of doctrine and rumor that pops up.
