At the end of chapter 1, Paul exhorted the church to “let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ.” Then, in verse 29, he encouraged, “For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake.” We know that there are going to be external challenges that face every believer, Paul’s encouragement is to remain humble through them.
Philippians 2:1 If there is any;
• comfort of love - compassion for each other
• fellowship of the Spirit - desiring unity
• any affection and mercy - care and concern for others.
v2 Make me truly happy by;
• by being like-minded - everyone pursuing God
• having the same love - Agape
• being of one accord - striving for unity
• of one mind - the mind of Christ
v3 Flee from self-ish desires, think of others first.
v4 Look out for each others best interests.
v5-7 Let’s have Jesus mind-set, though he was equal to God, he chose to leave the God-head, and become as we are, men.
v8 He humbled himself (even) as a man, though He has every reason to think highly of Himself, He became humble as a servant, even to the point of death on the Cross.
v9 Therefore, God exalted Him highly above all.
v10 That at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow (those in heaven, in earth and beneath the earth).
v11 That every tongue should confess, that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father!
Philippians 2:1 Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, 2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.
5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
• Humility and unity are two keys to victorious living in Christ. Without them, we become bogged down in our own daily struggles.
• Jesus was victorious on the Cross, because He humbled Himself to His Father’s will! So we too, should be humble to our Father's will.
